New postOprah's Weight Gain

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

Why is this news? I had to ask myself this question before I started to write this entry. Its news because it's Oprah. Any woman over the age of 30 knows that Oprah's weight is probably the most discussed topic other than the billions she has amassed as a media giant. Whether she brings attention to it or not, someone else will. I don't watch her show. I'm just not a fan. I stopped being able to relate to her ironically because of her emphasis on her weight. But when I do watch, I can't help but notice the fluctuations in size and I knew a show was soon coming about her weight. I knew it! Well we have it. She can't believe she has ballooned to 200lbs according to a huffingtonpost.com article.

The whole story will be in the upcoming edition of O Magazine and I'm sure it will sell like hotcakes. Simply because women relate to Oprah when it comes to weight. I know I do. As I mentioned earlier I stopped watching her show when she started discussing her weight loss. I guess it was because I had struggled with my body image so much as a teen and into my early twenties. I wasn't obese but not skinny either. My body type, that of an African American Woman was what I would call "lush". I have a round butt and thick thighs and I used to dislike these attributes before I learned to love them. I guess I was more uncomfortable with Oprah not being comfortable with her size and appearing to give into the media and public's preference for women to be thin and never age instead of embracing what may be her genetic heritage. With this being said, I acknowledge that health is another reason for her wanting to lose weight but this yo-yo dieting cannot be healthy. Can it? Just my thoughts today on Oprah. What are yours?
