New postOprah's Weight Gain

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

Why is this news? I had to ask myself this question before I started to write this entry. Its news because it's Oprah. Any woman over the age of 30 knows that Oprah's weight is probably the most discussed topic other than the billions she has amassed as a media giant. Whether she brings attention to it or not, someone else will. I don't watch her show. I'm just not a fan. I stopped being able to relate to her ironically because of her emphasis on her weight. But when I do watch, I can't help but notice the fluctuations in size and I knew a show was soon coming about her weight. I knew it! Well we have it. She can't believe she has ballooned to 200lbs according to a huffingtonpost.com article.

The whole story will be in the upcoming edition of O Magazine and I'm sure it will sell like hotcakes. Simply because women relate to Oprah when it comes to weight. I know I do. As I mentioned earlier I stopped watching her show when she started discussing her weight loss. I guess it was because I had struggled with my body image so much as a teen and into my early twenties. I wasn't obese but not skinny either. My body type, that of an African American Woman was what I would call "lush". I have a round butt and thick thighs and I used to dislike these attributes before I learned to love them. I guess I was more uncomfortable with Oprah not being comfortable with her size and appearing to give into the media and public's preference for women to be thin and never age instead of embracing what may be her genetic heritage. With this being said, I acknowledge that health is another reason for her wanting to lose weight but this yo-yo dieting cannot be healthy. Can it? Just my thoughts today on Oprah. What are yours?

New postI Love The Music Of The 70's , 80's....

Saturday, December 6, 2008

and the 90's. Right now I'm listening to a my favorite playlist called "Chillin". Its loaded with R&B and Pop from the 80's thru the 90's. The feeling of nostalgia that comes over me is so delightful. As I am writing this entry, I am listening to Heatwave's "Always and Forever". What a beautiful song. It has to be the #1 first dance wedding song in the African American Community. For anyone who has never heard it, I've provided a youtube clip. Just beautiful.

In my opinion the music of today cannot compare. I think every generation makes this claim but being a woman born in the early 70's and only having to rely on records, 8 tracks and the radio to bring music into my home, I appreciate the work that went into the production of such masterpieces as shown above. Everyone had raw talent and musicians were needed. Talent was a must. Today's artist can rarely translate the sounds that come out of studio produced work to the stage. Oh well, thank god for the internet. It has allowed me to capture some of the best music every made.

New postThe Cost Of Being Single

Friday, December 5, 2008

I had a very interesting conversation today with my friend. She is an upper level executive who is in the last stages of divorcing her husband of 11yrs. Child custody, support and dividing up the finances have already taken place. Her soon to be ex has already purchased a home they have been living separately for the last 5mos. All that is left is the final signing and filling of all legal documents. I say all of this because she has already started a new relationship. I talk to this friend on a daily basis about the trials and tribulations of being single. She has been with her husband for a total of 15yrs and although they struggled financially early on, their combined income at the end of their marriage was close to 200k.

She now finds the lack of income has hit her hard in the pocket book. Although she makes close to six figures and is steadily climbing the corporate latter, she has always had her eye on the ball when it comes to money. She definitely makes enough to cover all her expenses but with a failing or should I say failed economy we all find ourselves living in, she has had to make major cutbacks to a lifestyle she had become accustomed to living. Gone are the indiscriminate shopping sprees, bi-weekly trips to the hair and nail salon. Don't get me wrong, she's not feeling sorry for herself or wants anyone else to feel sorry for her. In the grand scheme of things she knows she's doing better than most and at the same time still wants to reward herself for all the hard work she has put into getting where she is in life. Which brings me back to our conversation today.

The statement of the day was "me and "new boyfriend" should just get married because the economy is so bad." I know she wasn't serious.... We've been good friends for over 20yrs and between the two of us, she is more leveled headed and less impulsive. But this comment got me thinking about implications if she was serious and truly felt that marriage to a man she just started dating was her only salvation from financial destruction. Of course as a good friend I would do my best to talk her down from such craziness. Although this guy seems like a good fit for her coming out of a relationship with a man who lacked the emotional warmth she needed, marriage for any reason, even for love at this stage is not an option I would encourage.

As a single, never married, childless woman who is self employed and struggling through this retched economy, I can see the temptation of such a union. I have toyed with the idea on occasion with a long time male friend that I dated on and off for 10yrs. But reality sets in and I easily pushed that thought out of my head. Would any of you consider a marriage of convenience? I have a twice married and divorced aunt who swears that a woman should only marry for money. Her reasoning is love can't pay the bills but a man with healthy bank account can. I've found many women of her generation believe this to be true partly because they had few career choices and opportunities that my generation and those below me now enjoy. But with the new economy we are now facing, is that option back on the table? I don't know. I guess it is a question a woman can only answer for herself.

New postName Change After Much Thought....

Thursday, December 4, 2008

I woke up this morning with the sole and the single minded purpose of focusing on making an entry on this blog without changing anything. I fell short of my intentions and changed the name of the blog from Healthy Choices For Women to Woman Inside Out. The essence and purpose of blog hasn't changed. It will still focus on the mind, body and soul of women but I felt the original name lacked the umpf I needed to entice a woman to visit and most importantly keep me focused on making this blog a success.I love creating blogs, tweaking templates and learning how to implement coding to improve its look and design. I find it very intoxicating and addictive. So that is why it was important for me to have a this one goal today.

During my many years of creating blogs I found that I have a creative side. I love creating things. From making purses from magazines, creating my own bath and body products to producing beautiful blogs. The power to see something in my mind and to translate it into an actual product simply fascinate me. So bare with me. I hope any changes I make will add to the use and beauty of this site.

New postReduce Your Holiday Stress By Listening to Music

Wednesday, December 3, 2008

Listening to music can have a tremendously relaxing effect on our mind, body and soul. Music can absorb our attention, it acts as a distraction at the same time it helps to explore emotions. This means it can be a great aid to meditation, helping to prevent the mind wandering. As the holiday season swings into full gear and the pressure to spend money grows, so does our stress levels. We tend to spend most of our time focusing on how to avoid stress, thereby creating more of it. Listening to relaxing or soothing sounds is something we can do while riding in the car, doing work around the home or while taking a relaxing bath or shower. Never underestimate the power of music. I find the best way to listen for relaxation is with my handy dandy little mp3 player. I can download hours of my favorite music and lay back, close out the world, breath and relax.

If music doesn't do it for you and maybe you wish to explore the world of meditation. Try Totally Tranquil. It is a stress relief program designed to sychronize your brainwaves to achieve a desired state or feeling.Don't be afraid to explore other options when it comes to your health
